# Grading & Exams

> Information on the academic grading system, exams, evaluation weightings, and make-up policies.

## The Grading System

In accordance with standard Algerian vocational education systems, Essal Institute utilizes a **0 to 20** point grading scale.

* **Maximum Grade:** 20/20
* **Minimum Passing Grade:** 10/20
* **Excellence Threshold (Mention Très Bien):** 16/20 and above

Students must achieve an overall average of at least **10.00/20** in a module to pass and earn the respective credits or module certificate. Grades are updated in real-time and can be viewed securely on the [Student Portal](https://app.essal.institute).

## Evaluation Weighting

Module grades are calculated based on a combination of continuous assessments, practical project deliverables, and formal exams:

| Assessment Type                              | Weight  | Description                                                             |
| :------------------------------------------- | :------ | :---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Continuous Assessment (Contrôle Continu)** | **30%** | Homework assignments, short quizzes, class participation, and lab work. |
| **Midterm Exam / Project (Examen Partiel)** | **30%** | Theoretical exam or structured project midway through the module. |
| **Final Examination (Examen Final)** | **40%** | End-of-module examination covering the entire curriculum. |

### Module Average Formula

<Card title="Module Average Formula" icon="calculator">
  **Final Module Grade** = (**Contrôle Continu** × 0.30) + (**Examen Partiel** × 0.30) + (**Examen Final** × 0.40)
</Card>

All marks must be entered onto the [Student Portal](https://app.essal.institute) by the instructors. If you notice any discrepancy, submit a grade appeal through the portal within 5 days of publication.

## Exam Policies

To ensure academic integrity, the following rules apply during all formal examinations:

* **Punctuality:** Students arriving more than 15 minutes after an exam starts will not be permitted to enter the exam room.
* **Biometric ID Check:** Your student ID card must be placed on the corner of your desk during the exam.
* **Electronic Devices:** Smartwatches, smartphones, and unauthorized calculators must be turned off and placed in your bags at the front of the room. Any device found on a student during the exam will be treated as an attempt to cheat.

## Academic Integrity and Plagiarism

Essal Institute enforces a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism and cheating.

* **Definition of Plagiarism:** Copying code, designs, or essays from another student or online source without attribution.
* **First Offense:** Grade of `00.00/20` for the assignment/exam, and a formal warning recorded on the [Student Portal](https://app.essal.institute).
* **Second Offense:** Immediate exclusion from the module and referral to the disciplinary board for potential suspension.

## Make-up Exams (Rattrapages)

If a student's final module grade is below 10/20, or if they missed a final exam due to a documented force majeure:

1. **Eligibility:** Students with module averages between **05.00/20** and **09.99/20** are eligible to take the make-up exam (Rattrapage).
2. **Scheduling:** Rattrapage exam schedules are posted on the [Student Portal](https://app.essal.institute) within two weeks following the release of the module results.
3. **Final Grade Calculation:** The grade obtained in the Rattrapage exam replaces the original Final Exam grade (40% weight). The continuous assessment (30%) and midterm (30%) grades remain unchanged.
